Birbal and the Mother Tongue – Akbar Birbal Story for Kids

Emperor Akbar’s court was famous for hosting the sharpest minds from around the world. One day, a brilliant scholar arrived at the palace. He claimed he had mastered dozens of languages and could speak all of them fluently.

To prove his point, the scholar spoke to the courtiers in perfect Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Marathi, and Tamil. Everyone was amazed. He did not have a trace of a foreign accent in any of them!

The scholar then presented a challenge to the court. “I challenge anyone here to guess my true mother tongue,” he declared proudly. “If you fail, you must admit that I am the cleverest man in the kingdom.”

The courtiers accepted the challenge eagerly. However, no matter how much they spoke to the scholar, they could not figure it out. Whenever they asked him a tricky question, he answered in a different language, always perfectly.

Finally, Emperor Akbar turned to Birbal. “Birbal, you are our last hope. Can you find out this man’s mother tongue?”

Birbal smiled confidently. “I will need until tomorrow morning, Your Majesty.”

That night, Birbal quietly sneaked into the guest room where the scholar was sleeping peacefully. Making sure the room was completely dark, Birbal pulled out a blade of ticklish grass he had brought from the garden. Gently, he tickled the sleeping scholar’s ear.

The scholar brushed it away in his sleep. Birbal tickled his ear again. Still half-asleep and suddenly very annoyed, the scholar woke up and shouted angrily in Telugu!

Birbal smiled softly and slipped out of the room.

The next morning in the royal court, Birbal announced, “Your Majesty, the scholar’s mother tongue is Telugu.”

The scholar gasped in shock. “How did you know? You are correct, but I never spoke a word of Telugu yesterday!”

Birbal bowed. “Your Majesty, it is a simple fact of human nature. No matter how many languages a person learns, in moments of sudden anger, fear, or surprise, they will always cry out in their mother tongue.”

The scholar admitted defeat and praised Birbal’s quick thinking. Emperor Akbar rewarded Birbal handsomely, proving once again that true intelligence is not just about what you know, but how you use it.

Moral of the Story: In moments of distress, a person’s true nature always comes out.
