The Boy Who Cried Wolf

Once upon a time, in a quiet village nestled at the foot of a grand mountain, lived a young shepherd boy named Leo. Every single day, from sunrise to sunset, Leo had one very important job: he had to sit on the grassy hills and watch over the village’s flock of fluffy white sheep.

At first, Leo loved being out in the fresh air. But as the days rolled by, sitting on the hill with only chewing, bleating sheep for company became incredibly boring. There was no one to talk to, no games to play, and absolutely nothing exciting ever happened.

One lazy afternoon, Leo decided he needed a little bit of fun. He remembered that the village elders had told him, “If a wolf ever comes near the sheep, you must scream for help, and we will come running!”

A mischievous smile spread across Leo’s face. He stood up on the highest rock, cupped his hands over his mouth, and yelled at the top of his lungs, “Wolf! Wolf! Help! A wolf is chasing the sheep!”

Down in the village, the men and women dropped their tools, grabbed their pitchforks and heavy walking sticks, and came sprinting up the steep hill as fast as their legs could carry them, completely out of breath.

When they finally reached the pasture, expecting to fight off a huge, scary wolf, they stopped in confusion. The sheep were peacefully eating grass. There was no wolf in sight. Instead, they found Leo sitting on a rock, roaring with laughter.

“There is no wolf!” Leo giggled, holding his stomach. “I just wanted to see if you would actually come!”

The villagers were not amused. “Leo, do not cry ‘wolf’ when there is no wolf!” an elder scolded sternly. “We left our important work to help you. A lie is nothing to laugh about.” Grumbling and wiping sweat from their foreheads, they walked back down the hill.

For a few days, Leo behaved. But soon, the boredom returned. The memory of the villagers sprinting up the hill seemed so funny to him that he couldn’t resist doing it again.

“Wolf! Wolf! Help! The wolf is back!” he screamed into the valley.

Once again, the loving villagers dropped everything and raced up the mountain. And once again, they found Leo laughing at them. This time, the villagers were furious. “If you keep lying, boy, no one will ever believe a word you say!” they warned him angrily, turning their backs to him.

Then, late one evening, as the sun began to set and cast long, creepy shadows across the field, the bushes began to rustle. A pair of glowing yellow eyes peered out from the dark forest. A real, heavy-set, hungry wolf stepped out and growled at the sheep.

Terrified, Leo jumped up. His heart pounded in his chest. “Wolf! Wolf!” he screamed, louder than he ever had before. “Help me! A REAL wolf is here!”

Down in the village, the people heard his cries echoing in the wind. But they just shook their heads and went back to eating their dinner. “It is just Leo trying to trick us again,” a farmer sighed. “We won’t be fooled a third time.”

Leo cried and shouted until his voice was sore, but nobody came up the mountain. Without help, Leo could only watch as the wolf chased the panicked sheep away into the dark forest, leaving him completely alone.

When Leo finally walked back to the village with his head hung low in shame, he had learned the hardest, most important lesson of his life.

Moral of the Story: Truth builds trust; lies destroy it. If you always tell lies, people will stop believing you—even when you are telling the truth.
