The Hermit and the Mouse

Deep in a quiet forest, lived a wise Hermit. He spent his days praying and feeding the birds. One sunny morning, while sitting outside his hut, he saw a tiny Mouse falling from the beak of a crow. Plop! The poor little Mouse was scared and shaking. The Hermit felt pity. “Do not worry, little one,” he said gently. “I will take care of you.” He fed the Mouse rice grains and kept him safe in his hut. The Mouse grew strong and loved the Hermit very much.

One day, while the Mouse was playing in the garden, a big black Cat appeared. The Cat licked its lips. “Mmm, a tasty snack!” The Mouse ran to the Hermit, squeaking in terror. “Help! The Cat will eat me!” The Hermit saw the Cat and waved his hand. Ping! “Be a Cat!” said the Hermit. Instantly, the tiny Mouse turned into a sturdy Cat. The real Cat was surprised and ran away. The Mouse-Cat was very happy. He meowed proudly and walked around the hut.

A few days later, a stray Dog came barking. The Mouse-Cat was terrified. He had the body of a cat but the heart of a mouse. He ran to the Hermit. “Help! The Dog is chasing me!” The Hermit smiled kindly. Ping! “Be a Dog!” he said. Now the Mouse-Cat was a big Dog. He barked loudly, and the stray dog ran away.

But the trouble didn’t stop there. One evening, a hungry Tiger came out of the jungle. The Mouse-Dog trembled with fear. The Hermit sighed. “You are still afraid. Let me make you the strongest of all.” Ping! “Be a Tiger!” Now, the Mouse was a Royal Bengal Tiger. He was huge, with sharp teeth and golden stripes. The other animals in the forest ran away in fear.

But the Mouse-Tiger looked at the Hermit. A wicked thought came into his head. “I am a powerful Tiger now,” he thought. “But this Hermit knows my secret. He knows I was just a silly little mouse. If anyone finds out, they will laugh at me. I should get rid of him.” He growled low in his throat and crouched to jump on the Hermit.

The wise Hermit looked into the Tiger’s eyes. He saw the ingratitude and the evil plan. “I gave you power, but you did not change your nature,” said the Hermit sternly. “You are ungrateful.” He waved his hand one last time. Ping! “Go back to being a Mouse!”

In a puff of smoke, the giant Tiger vanished. In his place stood the tiny, gray Mouse. The Mouse looked at his paws and squeaked sadly. He had lost everything because of his pride. He ran back into the forest, realizing he should have been thankful for what he had.

Moral of the Story: Never bite the hand that feeds you. Pride and ingratitude lead to a fall.
