The Jackal and the War Drum

A hungry Jackal named Gomaya lived in a vast forest. He was very thin because he hadn’t eaten in days. “I must find food today,” he muttered, sniffing the air. “Or I will faint.” He walked near an old battlefield where soldiers had camped long ago.

Suddenly, he heard a terrifying sound. DHUM! The Jackal jumped in the air. “What was that?” DHUM! DHUM-DHUM! The sound was deep and loud, like a giant monster’s footsteps. It seemed to be coming from a nearby bush. Gomaya was shaking with fear. “It must be a demon,” he thought. “Or a beast ten times bigger than a lion. I must run!”

He turned to flee, but his hunger made him pause. “Wait,” he thought. “My father always said, ‘Never run from a noise until you know what makes it.’ If I run now, I will starve. If I look, I might find food.” Summoning all his courage, Gomaya crept on his belly towards the bush. DHUM! He winced but kept moving. He parted the leaves and peeked through.

There, lying on the ground under a tree, was a large War Drum. It was old and the leather was dry. Above the drum, a low branch of the tree was swinging in the wind. Every time the wind blew, the branch hit the drum. Swish… BAM! “Oh!” laughed the Jackal. “It is just a drum! It has a big voice, but no teeth!”

He walked boldly up to the drum. He sniffed it. It smelled like… food? The soldiers had left some dried meat and bread wrapped near the drum, hidden by the tall grass. The Jackal found the stash and had a feast! He ate until his belly was full. “I am glad I didn’t run away,” he said, licking his paws. “Fear creates monsters in our mind, but bravery reveals the truth.”

Moral of the Story: Do not fear the unknown. Investigate before you panic. Most fears are just empty noise.
