The Two Friends and the Bear – Panchatantra Story for Kids
In a small village nestled among green hills, lived two boys named Rohan and Sam. They were best friends. They played together, went to school together, and swore they would always protect each other. “We are brothers!” Rohan would say. “Friends forever!” Sam would agree.
One sunny morning, they decided to go for an adventure in the nearby forest. It was a beautiful day. Birds were singing, and sunlight filtered through the leaves. They walked deep into the woods, laughing and talking. Suddenly, they heard a rustling sound in the bushes. Crackle… Snap! They stopped. “What was that?” whispered Sam. A huge, dark shape stepped out onto the path. It was a Bear! It was tall and furry, with sharp claws and a big, wet nose. It growled low in its throat. Grrrr…
Both boys were terrified. Rohan was quick and good at climbing. Without thinking, he spotted a tall oak tree. He scrambled up the trunk in seconds and sat on a high branch, safe from the bear. He did not look back. He did not help Sam. Sam was not good at climbing. He stood on the path, his legs shaking. “Rohan! Help me up!” he cried. But Rohan sat still, too scared to move or help.
The bear was coming closer. Sam had no place to run. He remembered something his grandfather had told him: “Bears do not like to touch dead things. If you are ever in trouble, lie still.” Sam dropped to the ground. He lay flat on his stomach. He closed his eyes tight. He held his breath. He tried not to move a muscle, even though his heart was pounding like a hammer.
The bear walked up to Sam. Sniff… Sniff… The bear’s wet nose touched Sam’s ear. Sam felt the bear’s warm breath on his neck. It smelled like berries and mud. Sam was terrified, but he didn’t twitch. The bear sniffed Sam’s hair. It sniffed his clothes. “He is dead,” the bear seemed to decide. It grunted, lost interest, and lumbered away into the forest.
Sam lay there for a long time, until he was sure the bear was gone. Then he slowly sat up, brushing the dirt off his clothes. Rohan climbed down from the tree. He looked sheepish and embarrassed. He tried to make a joke. “Wow, that was close! I saw the bear whispering in your ear. What did he tell you?”
Sam looked at Rohan. He was not smiling. “The bear gave me some very good advice,” said Sam quietly. “Oh? What did he say?” asked Rohan. “He told me,” said Sam, “Never trust a friend who leaves you behind when danger comes.” Rohan hung his head in shame. He realized his mistake. He had saved himself but abandoned his friend. Sam walked back to the village alone. Rohan followed him, learning a lesson he would never forget.
Moral of the Story: A friend in need is a friend indeed. True friendship is tested in difficult times.
