Birbal and the Lost Necklace

There was chaos in Emperor Akbar’s palace. The Queen’s most exquisite pearl necklace, which she had carelessly left on her dressing table near an open window, had vanished during the night. The palace guards searched under every bed, behind every curtain, and inside every vase, but found absolutely nothing.

Suspecting one of the palace servants, the guards wanted to throw them all into the dungeon.

“Wait!” Emperor Akbar commanded. “Let us call Birbal to investigate using logic rather than blind punishment.”

Birbal carefully examined the Queen’s chambers. He noticed that the window was wide open, and there was a small trail of very fine, brownish dirt leading from the windowsill toward an old crack in the stone garden wall below.

Instead of questioning the terrified servants, Birbal silently sprinkled a fine layer of white wheat flour just outside the crack in the wall and asked the guards to wait patiently overnight.

The next morning, Birbal brought Emperor Akbar to the garden. There, pressed perfectly into the white flour, were tiny, very non-human footprints trailing away towards an ancient banyan tree.

“Your Majesty,” Birbal said with a chuckle. “We are seeking a thief, but not a human one. I believe a mischievous little monkey climbed through the Queen’s window and snatched the shiny object.”

The guards immediately climbed the giant banyan tree. Near the very top branch, inside a hollowed-out knot, they found the missing pearl necklace, alongside a stolen silver spoon and a shiny copper coin.

The Queen was overjoyed to have her pearls back, and the innocent servants wept with gratitude because Birbal’s clever investigation had saved them from unfair punishment.

Moral of the Story: Truth reveals itself to the wise. A cool head and keen observation are much more valuable in finding the truth than jumping to conclusions.
