Birbal and the Painting – Akbar Birbal Story for Kids

Emperor Akbar was a great patron of the arts. Painters, poets, and musicians from all over the world came to his court to show their talents and win rewards.

One day, a very arrogant artist arrived at the court. He was dressed in fancy silk robes and carried a large canvas covered with a velvet cloth. He bowed low to the Emperor.

“Your Majesty,” proclaimed the artist, “I am the greatest painter in the world. My paintings are so realistic that people often mistake them for reality! Today, I have brought you my masterpiece.”

Akbar was intrigued. “Show us this masterpiece,” he commanded.

The artist carefully removed the velvet cloth to reveal… a blank white canvas. There was nothing on it. No colors, no lines, just empty white space.

The Emperor leaned forward, squinting his eyes. The ministers whispered among themselves. “Is this a joke?” they murmured.

“I don’t understand,” said Akbar, looking annoyed. “What is this painting supposed to be?”

“Your Majesty,” said the artist with a straight face, “This is a painting of ‘A Cow Eating Grass in a Lush Green Meadow’.”

Akbar looked again. “But… where is the grass?” he asked.

The artist smiled confidently. “The cow ate it all, Your Majesty! It was very delicious grass, and the cow was very hungry. She finished every blade.”

The courtiers giggled quietly. The artist was clearly trying to trick the Emperor with clever words.

Akbar, not wanting to look foolish, asked, “I see. The cow ate the grass. But where is the cow?”

The artist shrugged. “Well, Your Majesty, surely you don’t expect a cow to stand around in a field where there is no grass left? After she finished eating, she walked away to find more food!”

The artist bowed, looking very pleased with himself. He thought he had fooled the Emperor and would get a reward for his ‘clever’ art.

Akbar’s face turned red. He was about to explode with anger at being made a fool of. But before he could shout, Birbal stepped forward.

“Magnificent!” exclaimed Birbal, clapping his hands. “What a brilliant piece of art!”

The artist looked surprised. “You… you like it?”

“I love it!” said Birbal. “In fact, I think it is so realistic that I can see the rest of the story.”

“The rest of the story?” asked the confused artist.

“Yes,” said Birbal. He pointed to the empty canvas. “Look closely, Your Majesty. Since the cow has left, and the grass is gone, do you know what is left?”

“What?” asked Akbar, smiling because he knew Birbal was up to something.

“The cow dung!” shouted Birbal. “Look! The field is covered in invisible cow dung left behind by the invisible cow!”

Birbal turned to the guards. “Guards! Please take this painting outside immediately before it starts to smell! And take this ‘great artist’ with it.”

The whole court burst into laughter. The arrogant artist turned bright red with embarrassment. He realized that Birbal had used his own logic against him. He grabbed his blank canvas and ran out of the palace, never to return.

Moral of the Story: Do not try to fool people who are smarter than you. Empty words cannot replace real work.
