Birbal and the Ring in the Well

One bright, sunny morning, Emperor Akbar was taking a peaceful stroll through his royal gardens with his most trusted minister, Birbal. Akbar was gesturing wildly while telling a story, and the magnificent, diamond-encrusted ring given to him by his father accidentally slipped from his finger.

With a tiny splash, the precious ring vanished into a deep, narrow, and entirely dry well nearby.

Akbar was distraught. He immediately commanded his guards to go down and fetch it, but the well was much too narrow for a grown man to climb into, and far too dark to see the absolute bottom. Bringing long hooks and fishing nets proved completely useless.

Birbal saw the Emperor’s panic rising. “Do not worry, Your Majesty,” he said gently. “Let us use our minds instead of force. There is always a clever solution to a seemingly impossible problem.”

Birbal ordered a servant to bring him a large lump of fresh, wet cow dung and a very long piece of sturdy string. Ignoring the strange looks from the guards, Birbal tied the string around the wet dung. Carefully, he lowered the dung into the well, aiming squarely for the spot where the ring had fallen.

With a soft thud, the wet dung landed perfectly on top of the diamond ring.

“Now,” Birbal announced, tying the other end of the string to the well bucket, “we wait until tomorrow morning.”

Akbar was skeptical but decided to trust his clever minister. The next morning, the hot summer sun beat down into the well, baking the wet cow dung into a hard, dry, solid cake with the ring firmly stuck inside its crust.

Birbal simply gripped the string and pulled. Up came the dry cake with the Emperor’s precious ring safely embedded inside. Akbar was once again completely amazed by his minister’s practical wisdom and brilliant patience.

Moral of the Story: Calm thinking leads to clever solutions. When you face a difficult problem, do not panic; instead, take a step back and use observation and patience.
