Birbal and the Shorter Line
One day, in the grand, bustling court of Emperor Akbar, the Emperor decided he wanted to playfully test the intelligence of his Royal ministers. He stood up from his golden throne and walked down to the white marble floor, holding a piece of dark charcoal.
With a swift motion, he drew a straight black line right on the floor.
“Listen closely, everyone,” Akbar announced, crossing his arms with a challenging smile. “Whoever can make this line shorter, without erasing any part of it, will be heavily rewarded. But remember, you must not touch my line!”
The ministers gasped and began whispering to one another. They scratched their heads in sheer confusion. How could a line possibly become shorter if no one was allowed to rub it out, touch it, or cut it? One by one, the smartest ministers in the kingdom approached the line, stared at it, and shook their heads in defeat.
Finally, it was Birbal’s turn. Birbal stepped forward, a calm and confident smile on his face. He picked up another piece of charcoal.
Without hesitating for a single second, Birbal drew a second, completely new line right next to Akbar’s line. The only difference was that Birbal’s new line was much, much longer than the Emperor’s line!
Birbal stood up, dusted his hands, and said, “Look, Your Majesty. Your line is now shorter than mine, and I did not erase or touch yours at all.”
Emperor Akbar burst into hearty laughter. His court erupted into applause. Once again, Birbal had proven that true wisdom doesn’t require breaking the rules, but rather looking at the problem from a totally different point of view.
Moral of the Story: Wisdom often solves problems without conflict. Sometimes, the best way to appear taller is not to squish someone else down, but to simply grow higher yourself.
