Tenali Raman and the Elephant's Hair – Tenali Raman Story for Kids
A new Sadhu (holy man) had arrived in the kingdom of Vijayanagara. He set up a camp near the river and claimed he possessed magical powers. He told people he could cure diseases, predict the future, and grant direct entry to heaven.
Hundreds of gullible villagers flocked to see him. They gave him money, gold, and food, hoping for a miracle. The Sadhu traveled on a large elephant, which he claimed was a divine beast sent by the Gods.
Tenali Raman heard about this. He knew that true holy men lived simply and did not ask for gold. He realized this man was a fraud cheating the innocent people. He decided to expose him.
The next morning, Tenali went to the riverbank where a huge crowd had gathered. The Sadhu was sitting under a tree, chanting loudly, while his assistants collected donations. His elephant stood nearby, munching on sugarcane.
Tenali pushed through the crowd. He looked frantic and excited. He ran straight to the Sadhu and fell at his feet. “Oh, Great Saint!” cried Tenali loud enough for everyone to hear. “I have seen your power! You are truly divine!”
The Sadhu was pleased. “Bless you, my son,” he said, thinking Tenali was another rich follower.
Suddenly, Tenali jumped up and ran to the elephant. He grabbed the elephant’s tail and plucked a single hair. “Ouch!” the elephant grunted slightly, but Tenali held the hair up to the sunlight like a precious diamond.
“I have it!” shouted Tenali joyfully. “I have the key to Paradise!”
The crowd looked confused. “What do you mean?” asked a villager.
Tenali turned to the crowd, his eyes wide with fake amazement. “The Sadhu just whispered a secret to me!” he declared. “He told me that this elephant is not an ordinary animal. It is a celestial being! And he said that anyone who possesses a single hair from this elephant’s tail will go straight to Heaven after they die! No questions asked! Direct entry!”
The crowd gasped. “Really? A hair gives salvation?”
“Yes!” screamed Tenali. “This is more valuable than gold! I am saving my soul!” And he kissed the hair.
Instantly, pandemonium broke out. “I want one too!” shouted a man. “Me too! Let me through!” screamed a woman. “Save a hair for me!”
The entire crowd of hundreds of people rushed towards the poor elephant. They pushed and shoved, trying to grab the tail. The elephant, seeing a stampede coming, panicked. It trumpeted loudly and ran away.
The crowd chased the elephant. “Wait! Come back! I need a hair!”
The fake Sadhu was terrified. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. “It’s a lie! There is no magic!”
But no one listened. In the chaos, the Sadhu’s tent was knocked over. His bags of money spilled open, revealing all the gold he had stolen. Seeing the angry mob, the Sadhu lifted up his robes and ran for his life, leaving his “divine” elephant behind.
Tenali Raman stood by the tree, watching the chaos with a smile. He had driven the fraud away without fighting a single battle.
Moral of the Story: Blind superstition makes people foolish. Do not believe everything you hear without thinking.
