Tenali Raman and the Invincible Wrestler – Tenali Raman Story for Kids
One humid morning, the kingdom of Vijayanagara had a terrifying visitor. He was a colossal wrestler from a distant land, towering over everyone else. His arms were as thick as tree trunks, and his chest was like a broad wooden shield.
The wrestler stomped into Emperor Krishnadevaraya’s court. “I am the Invincible Wrestler!” he bellowed. “I have defeated the champions of fifty kingdoms. I challenge anyone in Vijayanagara to fight me! If I win, the Emperor must declare my King the greatest ruler in the land.”
The Emperor looked at his royal guards and strongest warriors. They all looked at their feet, terrified of being crushed by the giant. Nobody dared to accept the challenge.
Disappointed, the Emperor turned to his cleverest courtier. “Tenali Raman, this man’s bragging is insulting our kingdom. Is there nothing we can do?”
Tenali bowed easily. “Do not worry, Your Majesty. I accept the challenge. However, I have one condition. I will only fight him tomorrow evening, after I perform a special ritual to channel my unbelievable strength.”
The wrestler laughed heartily. “Take all the time you need, little man! I will crush you tomorrow!”
The next evening, the entire city gathered in the grand arena. The wrestler stood in the center, flexing his enormous muscles. Suddenly, from the gates, Tenali Raman marched in.
But Tenali was not dressed for a fight. Instead, he was dragging a massive wooden cart behind him. The cart was piled unbelievably high with enormous, heavy books bound in tight cloth. Tenali was struggling to pull it, wiping sweat from his forehead by the time he reached the center ring.
The wrestler stared in confusion. “What is all this? Are you going to throw books at me?”
Tenali Raman smiled fiercely and pounded his chest. “I do not fight unprepared! Before we wrestle, we must recite the ancient scriptures of combat!”
Tenali picked up the heaviest, dustiest book and patted it affectionately. “I have spent the entire night reading The Art of Bone Crushing. Once I finish reading these six thousand pages out loud, my body will be infused with the energy of a thousand elephants, making my fists hard enough to shatter solid rock!”
The wrestler gulped, looking at the massive mountain of books.
“After that,” Tenali continued enthusiastically, “we will read The Technique of Tearing Limbs, which takes another three days to recite. Only then will I be ready to face you properly!”
The wrestler’s bravado shattered. He had never heard of these terrifying books, and he certainly did not want to wait three days to face a man with the “energy of a thousand elephants”!
“You know what?” the wrestler stammered, backing toward the exit. “I just remembered I left my stove on at home. I have to go!”
Before anyone could say a word, the giant wrestler turned and sprinted out of the arena, running faster than anyone had ever seen him move.
The crowd erupted in cheers as the Emperor laughed until tears streamed down his face.
Tenali Raman revealed that the books were just old tax records from the royal library. He had once again defended the kingdom’s honor, proving that a sharp mind is much stronger than heavy muscles.
Moral of the Story: Brains can often defeat brawn when used correctly.
