The Selfless Hare

In a lush, lively forest lived four good friends: a monkey, a jackal, an otter, and a very gentle hare. They had all promised each other to be generous and share whatever food they found, especially on holy days.

One evening, as the moon began to rise, a poor, old beggar wandered slowly into their part of the woods. He looked incredibly thin, starving, and exhausted from a long journey.

The animal friends immediately wanted to help. The monkey quickly scampered up a tree and brought down sweet, juicy mangoes. The otter dove into the river and caught a large, fresh fish. The jackal sniffed around and found a pot of delicious curd left behind by a farmer.

They presented their wonderful gifts to the starving beggar. But the small hare sat quietly with tears in his eyes. Being a hare, he only ate simple green grass, and he knew a human could not survive on just grass.

“I cannot fish or gather fruit,” the hare said softly to the beggar, “but I can give you the only thing I have—my own body.”

The brave little hare built a small, warm fire using dry twigs. Without hesitating, he prepared to jump right into the flames so that the beggar could have a hot meal.

But just as he leaps into the air, the flames magically turned freezing cold! The poor old beggar suddenly threw off his ragged cloak and transformed into Sakra, the powerful Lord of the Heavens.

“Your pure, selfless heart has deeply moved me,” Sakra boomed gently. “Such incredible compassion must never be forgotten.”

Sakra carried the selfless hare up to the sky and painted his exact shape onto the bright surface of the full moon. Even today, if you look closely at the moon, you can still see the shape of the kind hare who gave everything he had to help another.

Moral of the Story: True kindness expects nothing back. Compassion and selfless love are deeply powerful and will always be remembered.
