Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears
A very long time ago, a mosquito was buzzing aimlessly around a lazy river when she spotted an iguana. Just to prove she was interesting, she told the iguana a massive, silly lie about a farmer whose yams were as big as an elephant.
The iguana grumbled. “That is the most ridiculous lie I have ever heard! I won’t listen to such nonsense.” He quickly picked up two thick sticks and jammed them tightly into his ears so he wouldn’t hear the mosquito anymore, and walked away.
Because the iguana couldn’t hear, he marched straight past a friendly python without saying hello. The python thought the iguana was terribly angry with him. Terrified, the python slithered quickly down the nearest rabbit hole to hide.
The unexpected snake terrified the rabbit, who panicked and ran frantically out of her hole. The sprinting rabbit scared the crow, who immediately sounded a loud alarm down the valley, “Caw! Caw! Danger!”
The loud alarm sent a monkey swinging wildly and blindly through the dense trees. The panicked monkey accidentally jumped on a dead branch, which snapped and crashed loudly into an owl’s nest, killing an owlet.
The mother owl was so deeply devastated by the accident that she refused to sing her morning song and wake up the sun. The whole jungle was plunged into endless, freezing darkness.
The great Lion King finally called all the animals to a meeting to find out what caused the disaster. The owl blamed the monkey, the monkey blamed the crow, the crow blamed the rabbit, the rabbit blamed the python, and the python blamed the iguana.
Finally, the iguana pulled the sticks from his ears and blamed the mosquito for telling a silly lie that started it all!
When the mosquito realized her tiny lie had caused such a massive disaster, she hid in absolute shame in the tall grass. To this very day, mosquitoes are still nervous. They buzz in our ears, asking softly, “Zzzzz, is everyone still angry with me?” And we usually answer with a quick SMACK!
Moral of the Story: Small lies can cause huge harm. We rarely know how far-reaching the consequences of an untrue rumor might be.
