Tenali and the Haunted House – Tenali Raman Story for Kids

King Krishnadevaraya was not just a powerful ruler but also a man who loved stories. However, one old rumor bothered him. On the outskirts of the capital city of Vijayanagara, there stood a large, dilapidated mansion. It had been empty for years. People whispered that it was haunted by ghosts.

“No one can spend a night there!” the villagers said. “Strange noises come from inside—howls, screams, and clinking chains!”

The King wanted to end this superstition. He announced in his court, “I will give a bag of one thousand gold coins to anyone brave enough to spend a single night in that old ‘haunted’ house.”

Many brave soldiers stepped forward, but as soon as they approached the gloomy gate and heard the wind whistling through the cracks, they ran away in fear.

Finally, Tenali Raman stood up. “I will do it, Your Majesty,” he said with a smile. “I have always wanted to meet a ghost.”

That evening, Tenali walked into the old mansion. He carried no protection, only a small mat and a pillow. He went to the main hall, dusted off a spot on the floor, and lay down to sleep.

Around midnight, strange noises began. Creak… thud… whoosh… Tenali opened one eye. He heard whispers coming from the next room. Instead of trembling, Tenali yawned loudly. “Is anyone there?” he shouted. “I am bored! If there are ghosts, come and entertain me! I like to play dice.”

Silence. Then, a scary figure draped in a white sheet jumped out from behind a pillar. “WoooOOOoooo!” it wailed.

Tenali laughed. “That is a terrible howl,” he critiqued. “You sound more like a sick cow than a ghost.”

The ‘ghost’ stopped wailing and looked confused. Another figure jumped out, rattling some iron chains. “And you,” Tenali pointed, “you are just noisy. Can’t a man sleep?”

The figures realized their tricks weren’t working. They approached him menacingly. But Tenali stood up and grabbed the white sheet of the first ghost. He pulled it off to reveal… not a demon, but a man! It was the leader of a notorious gang of thieves.

The thieves were terrified. They thought Tenali must be a powerful magician to be so unafraid. They fell at his feet. “Please, sir! Don’t curse us!”

“Ah, thieves,” Tenali nodded. “So you use the ‘ghost’ stories to keep people away from your hideout while you store your loot here.”

“Yes, sir,” they confessed. “Please don’t tell the King! He will punish us!”

Tenali thought for a moment. “I will make you a deal. Leave all the stolen treasure here for the guards to collect tomorrow, and promise to leave this kingdom and become honest farmers. If you do this, I will let you go tonight.”

The thieves agreed instantly. They ran away into the night, glad to escape with their lives.

The next morning, the King arrived with his guards, expecting to find a terrified Tenali. Instead, he found Tenali sitting on a pile of gold and jewels, eating a mango.

“Good morning, Your Majesty,” Tenali grinned. “The ghosts were very kind. They left a donation for the royal treasury.”

The King was amazed. The ‘haunted’ house was cleared, the thieves were gone, and the people stopped fearing ghosts.
